John L. Stacey, CDR, USN (ret)

John L. Stacey, 69, a retired Navy Commander and former submarine officer, died August 26th at a hospital in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He had Hodgkin’s disease.

Mr. Stacey was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and was a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. In addition to his duties as a submarine officer, he served at the Pentagon in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations from 1970 until his retirement in 1980.

After retiring from the Navy, he worked for a Fairfax, Virginia realty firm, Avis Adams and Associates. He lived in Fairfax until moving to Hilton Head in 2001.

He also worked as a consultant for some small firms in the Washington, DC area that worked closely with the Department of Defense.

In Hilton Head, he was a member of the Christian Renewal Church and the Republican Club. He was also employed by the Dunes Marketing Group.
He had previously been married to Gil Chamblin and Burnette Allen.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Gloria, of Hilton Head; three daughters from his first marriage; Ellen Kaeding of Tigard, OR, Martha Latham of Jackonville, NC, and Lisa Payne of Bend, OR. He also is survived by a step-daughter from his current marriage, Yvette Wyatt of Hilton Head, and seven grandchildren.
