Jon Fader, MT1(SS)

Jon was born in 1940 at Presbyterian Hospital in Newark, New Jersey to Irv and Bertha Fader. He, sister Judy (born in 1946), and his parents lived in Verona, a small suburb of New York City.

Jon graduated from Verona High School and attended college locally for about 3 years. After receiving his draft notice, he joined the Navy in February 1962. After boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended MT “A” School at Dam Neck, Virginia. He then attended Sub School at New London, Connecticut. After that, it was back to Dam Neck for MT “C” School.

In January 1964, after graduating from MT “C” School, Jon reported to USS JOHN C. CALHOUN (SSBN 630) which was undergoing new construction at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.

Jon married Joan Brown of Bloomfield, New Jersey in February 1965. Jon and Joan have two children; Jennifer and husband Dennis Atkins and children Andrew and Ben who live in Columbia, MD; Son Jamey and wife Gail, who live in Denver, CO.

Jon made 8 deterrent patrols aboard CALHOUN, and was honorably discharged from the Navy in April 1969.

In 1974, thanks to the GI Bill and great support from Joan, Jon completed his education with a BS in Management Science and Math at University of Maryland.

Children Jennifer and Jamey graduated from Linganore High School, Mount Airy, in 1986 and 1990 respectively. Jenn earned her teaching undergraduate degree at Frostburg State University, and her Masters in Special Education, at Johns Hopkins University. Jamey earned his undergraduate degree in Journalism at West Virginia University. Jenn works for U of M as a student teacher evaluator. Jamey is Chef/Owner of Lola Restaurant in Denver, CO.

Jon retired from BAE Systems (formerly Vitro Corporation) on 30 December 2005 after 36 1/2 years. He worked as a Senior Systems Analyst supporting the TRIDENT Strategic Weapons System.

Jon and Joan are both active members of St. James Episcopal Church near their home in Mount Airy, MD. Jon has served as Receiving Treasurer, on the Vestry, taught Sunday school, and chaired several committees over the past 29 years while at St. James. Joan is the Parish Secretary.

Jon enjoys skiing, travel, fishing, hiking, and (especially) spending time with his grandchildren Andrew, Ben, and Ella. He and Joan also enjoy traveling to Denver to visit son Jamey, daughter in law, Gail, and granddaughter Ella (and dining at Jamey’s restaurant).
